Cartoon Analysis Guide: Use this guide to identify the persuasive techniques used in political cartoons.

Symbolism-identify the symbols in a cartoon think about what the cartoonist intends each symbol to stand for.
Exaggeration-sometimes cartoonists overdo, or exaggerate, the physical characteristics of people or things in order to make a point. Labeling-cartoonists often label objects or people to make it clear exactly what they stand for.
Analogy-after studying a cartoon try to decide what the cartoon’s main analogy is. What two situations does the cartoon compare?
Irony-the difference between the ways things are and the way things should be or the way things are expected to be.

This cartoon uses exaggeration and analogy. The characters are depicted with exaggerated physical characteristics and mannerisms, such as the way the characters talk, which is exaggerated yet echos the very real immature squabbling and name-calling that so often runs rampant during political campaigns. The two main things being compared in this cartoon are the two characters on the left arguing with each other.

I think that the cartoon is labeling the flaws of the candidates in the debates.
